Student Assistant: Ellis Library Shelving

The Shelving unit for Ellis Library supports the mission of the Library and the University by providing an organized, accessible, and well maintained collection of books, journals, newsprint, and media.

This position supports the Shelving unit by shelving books, organizing and shelf-reading the stacks, shifting the library collection, and providing customer service to library patrons.

Shift Preferences:
These positions will work 10 to 20 hours a week between 8am and 5pm, Monday through Friday.

Specific Duties Include:

  • Ordering book trucks.
  • Shelving books by call number.
  • Shelf-reading the collection.
  • Straightening shelves of books and picking up in-house-use.
  • Cleaning books and shelves.
  • Shifting the collection.
  • Searching for missing books.
  • Sorting and shelving periodicals and magazines by title or call number.
  • Provide customer service to library patrons by assisting them with the location of books, navigating the library, checking the online catalog, and referring to staff as needed.

Job Requirements:

  • Good customer service skills.
  • Requires the ability to obtain/place materials on shelves at ground level and on shelves up to nine feet in height using step stools, ladders, or other devices.
  • Requires the ability to identify call numbers where lighting may be compromised, on shelves at ground level and on shelves up to nine feet in height using step stools, ladders, or other devices.
  • Requires the ability to move a book cart weighing at least 200 lbs. (these are on wheels).
  • Requires the ability to transport several books at one time and/or move boxes of books (up to 50 pounds).
  • Duties may expose you to mold and dust.
  • Requires the ability to perform very detailed work.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of Library of Congress classification system.
  • Familiarity with the stacks in Ellis Library.
  • Work experience in library setting.
  • Interest in library science.
