Seasonal Retail Assistant (The Mizzou Store/Tiger Team Store)

Summary

The Mizzou Store is responsible for supporting the academic mission of the University of Missouri, as well as supporting the MU brand through the sale of emblematic merchandise. Additionally, the University of Missouri Campus Stores operate multiple retail stores located throughout the state and associated e-commerce web sites.

This position is primarily responsible for performing various customer service and retail sales functions.

Seasonal Order Fulfillment Sales Assistant

This position provides customer service support to customers ordering from the multiple e-commerce websites.


Description

Essential Functions

Retail Assistant (Textbooks, Supplies, Cashiers, Greeters)

Provide the highest level of customer service including approaching customers with proper greeting, inquiring about their needs, maintaining a positive and friendly attitude, and helping customers with their purchases whether it is in person or on the phone. Create a positive shopping experience for the customer by demonstrating knowledge, care and interest, and passion. Resolve customer complaints in a timely, positive manner. Refer unresolved customer complaints to the appropriate department or individual.

Maintain thorough knowledge of all departments on the sales floor including a functional understanding of how textbooks are organized, where clothing items are back-stocked, how general reading books are arranged, etc. Remain proficient at operating a cash register to answer questions, but also supplement cashier staff, especially during peak times.

Maintain an effective and professional sales floor by ensuring that all aspects of the sales floor remain stocked, well merchandised, and clean according to established guidelines. Develop displays and product relocation as directed by student or department supervisors.

Ensure proper inventory controls are administered in a way to prevent loss. Advise department supervisor when inventory levels on the floor are not adequate. Utilize inventory worksheets to administer ad-hoc physical inventories to identify potential discrepancies. Maintain back stock according to established procedures including maintaining a well-organized stock room, proper back stock inventory levels, etc.

Coordinate and assist with event planning and special promotions including sidewalk sales, weekly specials, anniversary sales, holiday shopping events, summer welcome specials, homecoming weekend, graduation fair, football games, and others.

Order Fulfillment Sales Assistant

Perform customer service over the phone and via email. Answer a high volume of phone calls and emails, take customer orders for merchandise, and respond to inquiries. Assist with resolving discrepancies, providing information, and following up on customer requests.

Obtain merchandise to fill customer orders from in-stock merchandise, stock at local stores, or through stock in the Distribution Center. Process customer payments and returns. In addition, ensure incomplete or changed orders are communicated properly to supervisor and customer.

Perform data entry, ensuring inventory control and order tracking systems are accurate and up-to-date. Assist with maintaining inventory control through database updates and maintenance to ensure stock levels, sales, shipping cost, and inventory is tracked accurately. Generate various computer reports upon request, including sales history, shipping cost incurred, and customer activity levels.

Process shipping of packages to customers, including preparing packages for shipment, processing necessary paperwork, and ensuring deliveries are made. Follow-up and resolve any shipping errors or customers concerns.


Supervision Received

Functional supervision is received from department and/or student supervisors, as well as the store manager.

Supervision Exercised

No supervision exercised but may assist in training or mentoring other student or part-time employees.


Physical Requirements

Ability to communicate and comprehend verbal and written information/instruction.

Visual perception sufficient to examine merchandise and cash at close range.

Manual dexterity to handle cash, credit cards, etc. and operate a register.

Math skills sufficient to perform sales transactions.

Ability to stand for the duration of the assigned shift.

Ability to do light lifting for handling merchandise and products.

Ability to reach, bend, squat, climb, etc. as necessary to stock or retrieve merchandise.

The ability and patience to listen and understand the speech of a diverse customer base considering cultural, demographic, geographic and other important factors influencing communication.


Qualifications

Ability to work 20 hours per week minimum during Fall and Winter semesters, and 25 hours per week minimum during back-to-school rush.

Proven ability to work well without direct supervision.

Work history showing a high level of customer service, dependability, and professional attitude.

Computer skills sufficient to work in computer based inventory and point of sale systems.
