Trainee-Experiential Learning in Leadership

Quaker Oats of Columbia is developing a paid experiential learning in leadership opportunity to provide unique opportunities for engineering students to develop their leadership skills. Any MU engineering student is welcome to apply, regardless of year in school, major or discipline.

Quaker is developing this opportunity because interpersonal skills are extremely important in any work setting. All jobs require active team work and interaction with a diverse set of people – anywhere from customers to direct managers, to peers on a project team with a different set of skills. These skills will be needed anywhere from people leaders to project managers. The Quaker opportunity will give students the opportunity to work in various settings within the Quaker production facility while practicing leadership principles.

After applications are received, members of the Engineering Leadership, Engagement and Career Development Academy along with representatives from Quaker Oats will review them and conduct interviews. Students will be extended an offer contingent on passing a background check and drug screening.

The following leadership topics will be explored and practiced in the Quaker plant setting: communication methods, prioritization, training effectiveness, personality and/or generational differences, persuasion, active listening, engagement, peer or traditional mentoring, empathy in the workplace, methods of accountability and more. Ultimately, the student will perform a case study on a leadership topic and complete a paper and presentation regarding findings, lessons learned, recommendations and suggestions to improve the program. Student has the potential to continue part-time employment after program completion. However, participation in Quaker Oats Experiential Leadership Program does not guarantee future full-time employment.
