Summer 2020 Photo Editing Internship at The Wall Street Journal

INTERNSHIP OVERVIEW:
The Wall Street Journal internship program is an opportunity for college juniors, seniors and graduate students to be fully immersed in our Pulitzer Prize-winning newsroom, working with some of the best journalists in the world.

The 10-week paid internship program offers hands-on work experience and one-on-one mentorship, plus orientation and tailored training sessions. Interns are treated like full-time staff members and are encouraged to pitch their own stories and projects. The summer 2019 interns reported front-page news, created interactive graphics, edited photo projects, wrote colorful features, produced videos, curated and published our journalism across platforms, and much more.

We strive to be a welcoming, diverse newsroom. You don’t need to be an expert in business or finance to apply, but you do need to be curious and eager to learn. The program has a storied history as a pipeline to a full-time job at the Journal, whether immediately or down the road.

PHOTO EDITING INTERN:
The Wall Street Journal is seeking a photo editing intern to work with the photo team based in New York. The photo team researches and commissions photographs for digital and print editions of The Wall Street Journal.

We’re looking for someone with enthusiasm for good journalism and current events and sharp instincts for news and news values. You should have a basic understanding of photography and photo editing programs such as Photoshop and Photo Mechanics, and you must have evident knowledge of photojournalism and documentary photography.

You should have strong communication and organizational skills, plus a positive attitude and a drive to complete work quickly and efficiently. Social media savviness, especially with Instagram, is a must. Basic coding skills are a plus.

While we welcome active photographers to the department, the majority of the work during the internship will be in daily photo editing and department production assistance.

You will produce and build visual assets for news stories and enterprise content with attention to detail in a fast-paced newsroom, anticipating photographic needs as stories develop. You may also commission original content, working with photographers, editors and reporters to tell narrative, investigative, feature and enterprise stories on all platforms including mobile and print. You will have the opportunity to pitch visually innovative and original approaches to stories and to collaborate with the audience and platform teams on social strategy and distribution of WSJ content.

Our interns are self-starters who understand the needs of our growing audience across platforms and are able to work independently under deadline pressure. Sound news judgment and dedication to high journalism standards are a must.

The screening process puts heavy emphasis on work samples and prior experience.

HOW TO APPLY:
Please submit a resume, cover letter and no more than five samples of your work. (You may include a link to a website for work samples.) Only complete applications will be considered. The deadline to apply is Nov. 1, 2019.

TIMING:
Summer internships take place over June, July and August, though start dates can be flexible in certain circumstances.

Only finalists will be contacted. We will review applications on a rolling basis and strive to make selections by mid-December.

WILL I BE PAID?
