School Finance Accountant

The School Financial Services Team is responsible for distributing over $5 billion in state funds to public school districts and other local education agencies. The School Finance Accountant will shape the future of public education financial accounting and reporting for years to come. This position will engage in professional development, networking, and outreach with state and national associations. In-state travel for site visits are infrequent (1-3 per year), and working hours are on a regular schedule.

Position Summary:   
As part of the School Financial Services Team, this employee has responsibility for determination of well over $5 billion in general state aids and per pupil aids, as well as revenue limits affecting nearly $5 billion in school property taxes levied. This employee also participates in implementing and determining adherence to accounting, financial reporting, and auditing requirements for local education agencies (LEAs) which include school districts, Cooperative Educational Service Agencies (CESAs), and County Children with Disability Education Board (CCDEBs). This position provides advanced and highly technical consultation and direction to practicing certified public accountants, department staff, LEAs and other recipients of grant and aid programs. Independent performance, involving a high level of decision making affecting state policies concerning general state aids and revenue limits, is required. Extensive knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles and auditing standards, federal and state audit requirements, Wisconsin public school funding, and current issues in governmental financial accounting and reporting is necessary.

Applicants must have professional training in accounting or auditing such as that which would be acquired by earning a Bachelor's Degree in accounting, auditing, finance, or other business area from an accredited post-secondary college/university or commensurate experience and training.

• Calculating state or federal aid payments or performing calculations with reported data for compliance or reporting determinations (e.g., school district revenue limit calculations, school accountability reporting, federal program indicator reporting, etc.);
• Maintaining or developing data resources (e.g., longitudinal data summaries, assessment or accountability reports, public data files, etc.); and
• Analyzing financial or student data quality.
