Auditor/Accountant I-III

Salary: $21.99 - $29.67 per hour, depending on experience
The South Dakota Department of Health is looking for a motivated individual to join the department as an Accountant/Auditor located in Pierre. The primary responsibilities of this position will include grant and contract monitoring and managing internal control requirements. This position will analyze financial information and documents; provide technical assistance to department staff and funding recipients and provide oversight of agency-wide internal controls. This job will require occasional in-state travel.
Accountant/Auditor level will be based on education and experience.
Duties include:
  • lead the contract monitoring process which includes, performing financial reviews, conducting risk assessments and advising fund recipients and program managers;
  • provide internal controls technical assistance to grant managers;
  • perform professional accounting work that requires the application of accounting and audit theories, concepts, principles, and standards;
  • review and update grant and contract monitoring policies and procedures.
The Ideal Candidate Will Have:
Minimum of a bachelor's degree in accounting or related business degree. Previous experience in governmental accounting is beneficial.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles and practices;
  • experience in governmental accounting preferred, but not required;
  • understanding of internal controls and risk assessment;
  • knowledge of the State's accounting system is preferred, but not required;
  • Microsoft Excel, Word, Query and other desktop tools experience;
  • strong communication skills;
  • ability to conduct research, compile and analyze financial data;
  • work independently as well as with a team;
  • perform in a deadline driven environment.
