ACC - Resource Management and Maintenance Individual Placement - Monocacy National Battlefield

Pay Rate: $500/week + $1,612.43 AmeriCorps Education Award upon successful completion of a 450 hour AmeriCorps National Service Term

Position Summary:

The Resource Management and Maintenance Individual Placement is an internship position based at Monocacy National Battlefield in Frederick, Maryland.
The Resource Management and Maintenance Individual Placement at Monocacy National Battlefield will work directly with both the Natural and Cultural Resource Management, and Maintenance divisions to complete a wide variety of field projects in Summer, 2020. The 12-week position will work as part of multiple ‘teams’ to complete projects such as trail maintenance and repair; fence repair and construction; exotic plant management; landscaping; native species plantings; grass mowing and trimming; painting; and other summer projects. Interns will work with various tools and equipment including hand tools, trimmers, backpack and tank herbicide sprayers, and chainsaws. Individuals will also have the opportunity to work extensively with NPS staff biological science technicians, maintenance workers, carpenters, archeologist, Youth Conservation Corps enrollees, other interns, and the park’s Chief of Resource Management and Chief of Maintenance. Training may be provided in chainsaw operation and safety, pesticide use and safety, Operational Leadership (safety), wildland fire, plant identification, landscaping and pruning, and others as needed.
This is an AmeriCorps National Service Term. Interns will serve as AmeriCorps members, earning a $500 per week living stipend. Housing is not provided for this position. This position will also be eligible for a Segal Education Award upon successful completion of the position requirements.
General Qualifications:
To qualify, you must be between the ages of 18 and 29, and a US Citizen, National, or Legal Permanent Resident that has received a high school diploma or GED. All offers of employment are conditional upon completion of an acceptable check of the National Sex Offender Public Registry and federal criminal background check. Must be eligible to receive an AmeriCorps Education Award.
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Comfortable working in a field and office environment
  • Willingness to work as part of a team
  • Physically capable of field activities (hiking, carrying backpacks and equipment) in adverse conditions such as high heat, high humidity, rough terrain, etc.
Preferred Qualifications: 
  • Local resident in the Washington DC/Baltimore, MD/Frederick, MD metro area, able to commute to work daily
  • Demonstrated experience in a field environment
