Resource Development Intern

Background:
 The International Rescue Committee (IRC) helps people whose lives and livelihoods are shattered by conflict and disaster to survive, recover and gain control of their future. IRC teams provide health, infrastructure, learning and economic support to people in 40 countries worldwide. The IRC also provides support to thousands of refugees resettling in 22 U.S. cities each year through housing assistance, case management and referral services, job readiness and placement, English language training, community and cultural orientation, health and wellness programs, immigration services and other community integration activities. 

Scope of Volunteer Work
This role will work closely with the Development Team to help further the goals of the International Rescue Committee & support refugees, asylees and newcomers. This role is great for learning nonprofit development roles, nonprofit event planning, and honing grant management and donor tracking skills. The Resource Development Intern will work with the Development Team to research and identify potential funding opportunities, help coordinate creation of materials to respond to funding opportunities, and assist with executing new strategies to engage donors, both traditional and new, including fundraising events. The intern will work most closely with the Development Team but also work with other program managers at IRC on specific responses to funding opportunities. Other responsibilities include assisting the Development Team with administrative duties and tasks related to community outreach, grant opportunities, and special events. 

Location: IRC SeaTac Office, 1200 S. 192nd Street, Suite 101, SeaTac, WA 98148 

Time Commitment
Minimum 15 hours/week during IRC office hours (M-Th, 9am-5pm). Occasional evening or weekend events may be required. Potential that some activities may be done remotely. Regular schedule required, but may shift quarterly to accommodate intern’s schedule. Minimum 3-month commitment. 6 month-commitment preferred.
 
Essential Position Functions: 
  • Participate in planning, coordination, execution, and follow-up for IRC fundraising and outreach events 
  • Update and manage donation and grant tracking tools (including Salesforce software) with current status and next steps and help devise new tools as necessary  
  • Work with Development Team and program managers to develop appropriate materials to respond to funding opportunities  
  • Strategize new ways to engage with donors in the Seattle area 
  • Help research and identify new funding opportunities  
  • Organize and categorize existing grant application materials for standardized usage in future applications 
  • Assist staff in representing the IRC in Seattle at outreach events, such as tabling events and community engagement opportunities  
  • Help develop outreach materials, such as fact sheets and promotional flyers  
  • Other activities related to donor and community engagement, event planning, and fund development as assigned by supervisor  

Requirements
  • This internship is for undergraduate students, graduate students, or recent college graduates. Students pursuing degrees in the fields of communications, marketing, public relations, nonprofit management, or other related fields may be particularly interested in this position 
  • Deep commitment to IRC’s core values and the ability to model and communicate those values in relationships with IRC staff, clients, partners, and community leaders 
  • Strong writing and editing skills, with focus on details 
  • Strong research and organizational skills 
  • Ability to take initiative and think creatively to propose new ideas or solutions to the team 
  • Ability to adjust communication styles to be clear and persuasive with different audiences 
  • Must be able to work productively in a team environment, as well as under minimal supervision, taking the initiative to ask questions as needed 
  • Confidence in basic computer skills; must be able to work effectively with Microsoft Word, Excel, email, and internet applications 
  • Ability to handle sensitive information confidentially 
  • Experience working in multicultural environments is a plus 
  • Experience designing print or digital materials for external audiences is a plus
