Associate Underwriter (Property)

Entry-level underwriter position designed to teach insurance knowledge and practices essential for the ability to make decisions as to individual risk selection and qualifications of applications for insurance. Evaluates new and existing business and exercises judgment regarding retention and rating of such business. Communicates with, and provides services for applicants, policyholders, claims, and sales with regard to coverage, rating, and risk evaluation.

  • Develops knowledge of applicable manuals, forms, rates, and endorsements.
  • Examines applications and supporting documents.
  • Gathers and assesses data such as applicant’s age, previous loss record, inspection reports, non-sufficient funds issues, underwriting precedent, and other information that may be helpful in evaluating the risk.
  • Learns and checks for proper classifications, policy coverage, endorsements, and rates.
  • In a timely manner accepts, declines, recommends risk improvements, or modifies insurance coverage for the person or property listed on the application.
  • Discusses exceptions to the General Underwriting Guidelines with a senior underwriter or supervisor.
  • Submits complex, unusual risks, and risks exceeding personal underwriting authority to a senior underwriter or supervisor for approval.
  • Learns and maintains compliance with state or federal regulations applicable to risk selection.
  • Communicates with field personnel, departmental staff, and others regarding underwriting decisions, coverage, procedures, best practices, etc.
  • Learns and keeps informed on all factors related to risk selection.
  • Provides excellent customer service to all external and internal customers and maintains a good working relationship with field and Home Office personnel.

Bachelor’s degree in Business, Agriculture, or related area; except that additional related work experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the formal education requirement.

  • Bilingual (Spanish) capabilities is an asset but not required.
  • Knowledge of agriculture and agricultural practices.
  • Ability to operate a personal computer.
  • Ability to read, write, analyze and comprehend instructions, documents, and correspondence.
  • Ability to collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to handle and process confidential and private information in an appropriate manner.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment and communicate effectively.
  • Ability to demonstrate good judgment in seeking assistance from supervisors or others when appropriate.
  • Ability to meet deadlines while dealing with and prioritizing a high volume of work.
  • Ability to learn and adapt to continual changes in products, procedures, and personnel.
