Assistant Controller

The Assistant Controller oversees overall operations of the Accounting departments including Accounts Payable and Credit Services. Responsibilities include managing the fuel close process for Maverik, which includes, but is not limited to, reviewing account reconciliations, monthly excise tax filings and ensuring that all business transactions are properly recorded. Additionally, the Assistant Controller ensures that appropriate controls are employed to protect company assets.

What You’ll do as an Assistant Controller:
  • Leads the monthly closing process ensuring completed analysis and documentation along with generation and communication of accurate (according to GAAP) and timely produced financial statements
  • Supports the assessment and documentation of internal controls systems and processes
  • Communicates regularly and effectively with business unit and department heads to ensure timely and effective financial information is provided to enable effective business decision making process
  • Ensures accurate and timely filings with regulatory and tax agencies
  • Coordinates with external fuel auditors in planning and completing government entity tax audits
  • Stays current with technical accounting pronouncements, promptly assess impacts, and communicate with internal constituents.
  • Designs, modifies, installs, and/or maintains accounting systems.
  • Trains, develops, and manages performance of accounting staff according to company and standard accounting procedures
  • Special projects as needed
  • Additional responsibilities as assigned
You’ll be a Great Fit if You Have:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting is required; CPA license is preferred
  • 7-10 years of experience in general accounting including several years supervising multiple groups/departments with a history of increasing responsibility
  • Experience with excise tax preparation and compliance preferred
  • Collaborative leadership and management style
  • Strong interpersonal skills a must – both written and oral communication skills
  • Proficient problem solving and analytical skills
  • Proficient in MS Office applications, very strong excel skills required
  • Display strong initiative and organizational skills, with ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks
  • Ability to assist in establishing effective processes
