Journalism Career Services Assistant
The MU Career Center and the School of Journalism have a partnership to provide career services to students in the School of Journalism. A Career Center staff member trains and supervises two paraprofessionals that are embedded in the advising suite of the J School.
The Career Center is looking to recruit a new Part Time Assistant to help provide career advising to J Students. As the Journalism Career Services Assistant, you will be responsible for:
Advising & Communication
- Staffing JCS Walk-In Hours to answer career-related questions and advise Journalism students one-on-one
- Managing the career services section of the Journalism UG Advising Canvas page and developing new career resources and materials for Journalism students
- Responding to Career Center e-mails from students and employers in a professional, timely manner
- Manage student appointments and office hours on MU Connect
Marketing & Outreach
- Writing and distributing weekly JCS Newsletters (Canvas announcements)
- Promoting Journalism Career Services and our career resources (HireMizzouTigers, etc.) to Journalism students and student organizations.
- Creating and developing career events for Journalism students
- Working with the Career Center and School of Journalism to create new marketing strategies to promote career services to students (fliers, emails, social media, videos, etc.).
- Building relationships and maintaining communication with key Journalism faculty, staff and leadership (Associate Dean)
HireMizzouTigers & Handshake
- Reviewing and approving online résumé submissions of Journalism students and alumni, communicating necessary/suggested revisions according to MU Career Center standards.
- Posting jobs on behalf of employers and invite employers to join with the University of Missouri on Handshake, the campus-wide career platform
- Providing administrative support to the HireMizzouTigers website which includes: running reports, maintenance of employer contacts, etc.
Other Responsibilities
- Assist with the collection and reporting of Outcomes Survey responses (post-grad plans of recent Journalism graduates)
- Assist with assessment efforts including semester-end reporting, data analysis and program review
- Coordinate schedules with other Journalism Career Services Assistant and participate in weekly staff meetings.
- Perform other projects assigned by full-time staff members that support mission of MU Career Center and its programs and services.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Journalism major or work experience
- Experience reviewing resumes or writing/editorial background
- Customer service-oriented; experienced/comfortable working with and advising peers
- Strong communications skills (writing, presenting)
- Students should be in Sophomore, Junior year or entering graduate student (starting Fall 2021) and commit two minimum 2 semesters
- Must be a self-motivated and responsible individual comfortable with setting and adhering to work hours
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
- Possess initiative, strong work ethic, and willingness to learn and ask questions
- Self-motivated and responsible individual comfortable with setting and adhering to work hours
- Creative and strategic thinker with close attention to details
- Experience or quick learner with software programs
- Familiarity with HireMizzouTigers/Handshake a plus
**Students MUST attend mandatory online career training session August 9-13, 2021**
HOURS/SCHEDULE
This is a 20 hour/week position for 9 months. It is a one-year position that can be renewed after review of employee performance and budget considerations. Hours are flexible and built around your class schedule.
