This position will use a proactive approach of written and digital content to generate interest in South Dakota as a place to do business and live a fulfilling life. This role supports the Communications department in executing and monitoring communications strategies. Responsibilities include: writing and editing a variety of press releases, website copy, feature stories, media advisories, talking points, creative copywriting on brochures, print ads and feature articles; writing and monitoring social media and related analytics; coordinating communication strategies and practices; targeting statewide and industry media, legislators, boards, and local economic development community leaders; help coordinate efforts for earned media in GOED’s targeted industries; providing support to the Communications Director and the different facets within the Governor’s Office of Economic Development including legislators, boards, economic development offices across the state and assisting with other marketing/communications efforts as needed.
Occasional travel required.
This position is exempt from the Civil Service Act.
The Ideal Candidate Will Have:
Applicants with exemplary writing (including creative copywriting) and editing skills; excellent interviewing skills; and working knowledge of best social media practices, and 3-5 years of public relations/communication experience are preferred. 
Must be willing to work in person in our Sioux Falls office.
Knowledge of:
  • public relations techniques;
  • best practices in social media;
  • Associated Press style;
  • Microsoft computer software applications and computer operation;
  • media distribution software;
  • South Dakota's main economic industries.
Skill to:
  • assist Communications Director in implementing and measuring internal/external media communication plans.
Ability to:
  • establish and maintain effective working relationships with media, staff, and the public;
  • communicate information clearly and concisely;
  • organize and prioritize work;
  • research and compile information;
  • think creatively;
  • work independently or as part of a team.
