Job Description: Johnson County Mental Health is looking for qualified candidates to fill one of the positions of Clinician Co-Responder serving the Overland Park Police Department (OPPD). This position works as a member of JCMHC’s Emergency Services Division but will be based out of the Overland Park Police station as a part of their Behavioral Health Unit.

The goals of the program include decreasing unnecessary trips to the emergency rooms, avoid preventable arrests and reduce repeat mental health calls for the police department. The co-responder will work with the OPPD in providing community-based interventions and crisis assessments for individuals who encounter law enforcement for a behavioral health related call. The co-responder will provide interventions at various locations in the community but will always be accompanied by a law enforcement officer once the scene has been determined to be safe. The co-responder will typically ride with a CIT Specialist during their shift to prioritize 911 calls and outreach.

The work schedule will be four 10-hour shifts. The hours will be Wednesday – Saturday 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. The schedule may include meetings and trainings outside of the normal schedule, so flexibility is necessary.  This position will remain open until filled.

The primary responsibilities for this position include:
  • Partners with OPPD’s law enforcement officer and the Behavioral Health Unit to continue to enhance the behavioral health response to citizens.
  • Responds in person to 911 behavioral health calls alongside law enforcement to conduct a comprehensive assessment to include recommending appropriate level of care, assessing individual risk for suicide and other safety related concerns, determining the need for resource referrals, and communicating relevant information to individuals, families, and other stakeholders.
  • Develops complex intervention plans to address the clinical needs of individuals; collaborates with JCMHC teams and other community agencies to advocate and partner for individuals’ needs; collaborates with other providers in the development, implementation, and review of intervention plans.
  • Reviews police reports and determines appropriate next steps, including follow up needs after the initial call to ensure the crisis has resolved and/or if additional resources are needed. Follow up can be conducted by phone or an in-person outreach alongside an OPPD law enforcement officer.
  • Submits clinical documentation regarding services provided; completes the state hospital screening for involuntary committals and any additional required documentation.
  • Facilitates trainings with OPPD regarding role and mental health related topics; participate in presentations in the community regarding the co-responder program.
  • Assist in program development related activities to include data collection, reports, conferences, and relevant trainings.
