Johnson Household Personal Assistant

Job Description
We are building a team of up to 3 personal assistant positions for a young man with Spina Bifida and related developmental delays. This is a unique and rewarding opportunity to learn about developmental disabilities and applied behavior analysis while helping an exceptional and intelligent young man discover opportunities for growth in his life.

Following a childhood filled with surgeries and graduating from high school in 2018, this young man is trying to figure out where his life will lead. He will enjoy the fresh energy and input from new perspectives as he pursues his interests and explores the possibilities of his future.

Young man has a team of doctors, professionals and family in Columbia and you will be a part of the team. As a personal assistant you will be responsible for creating a schedule of activities for your shift, transitioning him to multiple activities, interacting with him on-on-one, possibly assisting with simple meal prep, and generally hanging out with him. You will accompany young man to various activities outside the home, including some adapted services. He utilizes a manual wheelchair for mobility and has gaps in his gross- and fine-motor skills.

While he is a very personable and likeable young man, he occasionally displays some moderate to severe problem behaviors. Extensive training will be provided for all aspects of care, especially in effective strategies for avoiding and managing problem behavior.
   WORK SCHEDULE
Work schedule will vary and be adjustable around a student’s schedule. Hours of focus are 8AM-6PM, Monday through Friday, with occasional shifts on weekday nights and weekends. Shifts are usually 1-3 hours in length.

We will use a team of students and when fully staffed, we can accommodate most schedule requests. We need someone who is willing to work a minimum of 10 hours a week, but ideally 15-20 hours.

Qualifications
Experience with developmental delays is not required. A strong desire to gain experience working with individuals with disabilities is a must. Applicant must love having fun and be a motivating individual who can come up with creative ideas. Applicant must take initiative to engage and encourage young man to do various activities in the home and in the community. Young man has an affection for animals so animal lovers are encouraged to apply.

We are looking for someone who is teachable, who shows initiative, who is thoughtful, caring, organized and dependable. We will teach you specific ways of working effectively with him. This is a home setting and we look for PAs who are friendly, outgoing and easy to get along with. As work will be primarily in our home, access to your own transportation is required.
