Summary Description
Under the general direction of the Pool Manager and the Director of Facilities, the Lifeguard is responsible for ensuring the safety of all members/guests of Woodside by properly assessing the pool areas and acting quickly when responding to emergencies. The Lifeguard works diligently to uphold and enforce all policies set forth by Woodside. Responsible for maintaining a good working relationship with all pool staff, members and guests.

Duties / Responsibilities
 
While on Stand
·        Maintains continuous surveillance of all members / guests in the pool
·        Monitors all swimmers and pool participants to ensure that all follow safety protocols and rules of the pool
·        Continuously scans the pool and surrounding areas for potential hazards and take proactive steps to help avoid accidents
·        Readily responds to drownings or injuries by providing appropriate first aid and/or CPR care and treatment aa needed until emergency medical services arrive to takeover
 
While Off Stand
·        Acts and responds as needed to any incident or injury and provides accurate documentation as required
·        Walks and commands the pool deck – even when not on stand, always aware of activities
·        Checks safety of rescue tubes, buoys and equipment; reports needed maintenance
·        Opens and closes the pool per procedural checklists
·        Performs consistent pool chemical checks to ensure safety and hygiene
·        With direction of Facilities Manager or Director of Facilities adds chemicals to the pool
·        Maintains accurate records of pool use and chemical levels
·        Skims, brushes and vacuums pools as needed
·        Performs regular bathroom checks a minimum of every 30 minutes to ensure that they are clean, supplied and in good working order
·        Required to assist in teardown and setup of all pool furniture as needed for swim meets, special events, and any other activities
·        Provides additional assistance to Pool Utility staff by clearing used towel and refreshing supply of clean towels
·        Refills water containers when empty; clear dishes and trash accumulation in all pool areas
·        Ensures that all pool equipment is stored safely and that any lost & found items are kept in a secure location
·        Enforces pool and pool area rules and regulations to ensure a safe and professional environment for all members and staff
·        Maintains cleanliness of pool office area and related storage closets
·        May at times be asked to support special events within Club
·        Moves throughout the shift with purpose; no personal cell phone usage during shift
·        Complies with Club’s employee handbook manual, departmental policies and procedures and with all applicable federal and state employment laws
·        All other duties as assigned
 
 
Job Standards
Any combination of education and experience providing the required skill and knowledge is qualifying. Typical qualifications would be equivalent to:
 
Education/Experience:
 
High School Diploma. At least 1-2 years of club desk experience.
·        Valid Red Cross First Aid/CPR Certification
·        Must be minimum of 15 years of age prior to February 1 of each year
·        Must attend all required in-service dates and training with Staff Manager
 
Skills:   
·        Ability to react to extremely difficult situations and remain calm and
               effectively manage emergency situations
·        Excellent skill in the application of lifeguard surveillance and all rescue techniques
·        Excellent customer service skills, communication and demonstrates diplomacy
·        Ability to multi-task and focus on details
·        Must exhibit confidence and ability to reason and problem solve quickly
·        Must be able to address situations with all age groups
·        Ability to follow written and verbal commands and instructions
 
Knowledge:
·        First Aid, CPR, AED and related emergency medical procedures
·        Lifesaving practices
·        Pool chemical testing
 
 
Licenses:
·        Valid Driver’s License - or reliable transportation to and from work
 
 
·         
 
Special Requirements: 
·        Regular and predictable attendance is required
·        Ability to work special events, promotions and other demands of the position which may require early morning, late evenings and weekend hours
·        Ability to work outside in extreme heat
·        Ability to move 50 or more pounds on a regular basis
·        Ability to communicate well in English

Safety Hazards:
·        Outdoors 95% of the shift in direct sunlight
·        High volume of people, majority children
·        Mid to high noise levels
·        Handling of pool chemicals
·        Climbing up and down guard stand
