MizzouRec Lifeguard (Student)

To be eligible for a student title, an individual must be enrolled at the University of Missouri. Enrollment in the summer session is not required if the student was enrolled in the Spring semester and is pre-enrolled for the Fall semester. Selection is contingent upon results of a review with the Office of Institutional Equity, Office of Student Accountability & Support, Office of the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, previous MU appointment history, and reference checks.

Lifeguards are responsible for ensuring the safety of facility patrons by preventing and responding to emergencies. Must have the ability to work non-traditional hours such as late nights, early mornings, weekends and university holidays and breaks. This position requires good recognition and decision-making skills and the ability to work with little supervision. Individuals must be assertively friendly and have an extensive working knowledge about facilities and services.  This individual must remain American Red Cross Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED certified during course of position
DUTIES INCLUDE (but not limited to)
  • Ensure patron safety at all times
  • Be prepared to act quickly and correctly at all times, especially in time of emergency
  • Know and consistently enforce the rules and regulations of the Mizzou Aquatic Center
  • Maintaining current knowledge of policies, procedures, and events in the facility
  • Follow established communication protocols with direct supervisor, Aquatic Leads, and Team Mizzou coworkers
  • Attend all in service and staff training sessions
  • Maintain ability to perform all necessary skills in accordance with American Red Cross Lifeguarding and MizzouRec standards
  • Communicate any broken or dysfunctional equipment immediately to Aquatic Leads or Professional Staff
  • Adhere to all University, MizzouRec, Team Mizzou, and area specific guidelines
  • As with all positions, involvement with other duties and responsibilities is expected in order to serve the customer and maintain the MizzouRec mission.

AVERAGE TIME COMMITMENT:
5-15 hours/week during fall and spring semesters
15 – 25 hours/week during the summer
ADDITIONAL SCHEDULE EXPECTATIONS:
Position responsible for coverage during all hours of facility operation. Hours adjust based on semester and holidays. Hours may include early mornings, late evenings, and weekends.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • University of Missouri student in good standing with the university
  • Pre-employment testing of lifeguarding skills and knowledge
  • Previous certification in American Red Cross Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED or equivalent certification may be considered
  • Selection is contingent upon successful results from an Office of Inclusion and Equity, Office of Student Accountability Services check, and review by the office of the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs
  • Current American Red Cross Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED
  • Basic risk-management experience in an aquatic facility setting
