Summering Engineering Experience for Kids (SEEK) Mentor/Site Director

Who are our Mentors?

NSBE’s SEEK program recruits undergraduate students and professionals dedicated to mentoring and providing support to elementary students in underprivileged communities through STEM education. Our mentors are tasked with teaching engineering concepts in a fun and motivating environment. They are part friend, part counselor, part teacher and serve as ideal role models to our students. Due to necessary adaptations stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic, we are offering remote employment opportunities.

Mentor Experience

  • Collaborate with peers to instruct and manage a classroom of elementary school students
  • Teach general math and science concepts to students at age-appropriate levels
  • Instruct students in a variety of hands-on engineering activities complemented with a curriculum
  • Interact with local community leaders and members/employees of our corporate sponsors.
  • Expose students to career options that may not be represented in their community

The Commitment

  • Programs will be offered May - August
  • Each program last a total of 4 weeks (1 training week + 3-week program)
  • Participants must be available all 4 weeks of the program
  • Housing is provided to mentors assigned in locations away from their home, subject to availability
  • In-person & Remote Opportunities Available

*Additional Opportunity* This summer we have partnered with the Center for Innovative and Strategic Transformation of Alkane Resources (CISTAR) at Purdue University to offer a paid research opportunity of up to $5,000! Mentors selected to participate in this program will spend 6-weeks completing cutting-edge research on energy with the chance to present findings during the Emerging Researchers National (ERN) Conference in STEM. Candidates must complete both the SEEK and CISTAR application to be considered. See details here!
