Camp Health Center Assistant

YMCA Camp Carter serves over 1,400 campers each summer through its weeklong day and overnight-camp sessions filled with fun and adventure. In partnership with the Camp Health Center Manager, the Camp Health Center Assistant is an integral part of the Camp experience and provides health, safety, and general medical services to campers and staff in accordance with the policies and procedures of YMCA Camp Carter, the Fort Worth YMCA, and the American Camp Association. The Camp Health Center Assistant’s primary responsibilities will be to assist the Camp Health Center Manager in administering medications, providing basic first aid and support to campers and staff, maintaining records, and responding to emergencies in a professional manner.

Dates and Times: The Camp Health Center Assistant must be available from May 27th through August 10th, 2024. Onsite room and board is available. The Camp Health Center’s hours will be 7:00 am to 6:00 pm during day camp sessions (May 28 – June 11 and August 5 – August 9). During the overnight camp season (May 12 – August 3), the Health Center will operate from 7:00 am to 10:00 pm, with the potential of hours between 10:00 pm to 7:00 am to administer night medications and assist any ill campers.  The Camp Health Center Manager and the Health Center Assistant will be responsible for coordinating with each other and Camp leadership staff to ensure that medical needs of campers and staff are served during those times.

This position pays $400/week before taxes.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must have a current a minimum EMT License or above
  • A clean driver’s license is preferred; the Health Center Assistant will be operating a golf cart.
  • Ability to carry up to 50 lbs
  • Must have current CPR and First Aid certification.
  • Ability to quickly reach more remote areas of the camp property over uneven terrain in the event of an emergency.
  • Must be organized

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Medical care:
    • In collaboration with the Health Center Manager, provide health care to meet individual needs of camp staff and campers.
    • Practice within standards set forth by the Texas Department of Health, the American Camp Association, the YMCA, and any applicable laws and regulations.
    • Administer medications in a timely and safe manner, demonstrating knowledge of pharmacology.
    • Ensure accurate transition of care and follow up as needed to Emergency Medical Services, hospitals, physicians, and parents.
    • Working with the Health Center Manager, screen all campers before and at the time of their arrival at camp, verifying health history and emergency authorization, identifying any observable evidence of illness or communicable diseases, noting any allergies or other medical needs, keep all medications used by campers and staff.
  • Documentation:
    • Maintain accurate documentation per Camp Carter, state, and American Camp Association policies and procedures.
    • Utilize daily medical log for treatment and medications.
    • Prepare and record incident reports when necessary.
    • Ensure staff and camper health examinations are current and on file.
  • Communication:
    • Communicate with parents as necessary regarding camper illnesses and/or injuries.
    • Communicate with staff regarding any camper medical conditions or necessary accommodations, medications, and allergies.
    • Report any health problems or illness symptoms to the Camp leadership team.
  • Facility:
    • Organize, maintain, and utilize adequate resources for serving the health and medical needs of the campers and staff.
    • Monitor and assist in maintaining health and safety practices throughout camp by preparing program areas with adequate water, sunscreen, and other prevention materials.
    • Assist in maintaining cleanliness and sanitary practices in the Dining Hall.
    • Work with staff to minimize/eliminate health and safety risks.
    • Prepare and distribute first aid kits throughout camp including camp vehicles, activity areas, and common areas, and distribute first aid kits to camp staff. Once distributed, ensure that first aid kits remain well-stocked.
  • Other:
    • Interpret and enforce all camp policies, rules, and regulations.
    • Maintain security of medications and health records.
    • Follow COVID-19 policy and protocols.
    • Facilitate staff and guest awareness of unsafe or at-risk behaviors and conditions.
    • Participate in emergency drills and trainings.
    • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director and Camp leadership team.
