Public Affairs Director

Job Summary

The Public Affairs Director oversees the Library’s Public Affairs department and is responsible for its function and success. Reporting to and in consultation with the Deputy Director for Public Affairs and Community Engagement, this individual effectively plans, coordinates, supervises, and evaluates Library marketing, communications, public relations, and community programming initiatives, extending to the creation and development of the diverse array of subject matter featured on Library websites and in printed materials.

This is a full-time exempt position. Starting salary is $71,971 plus excellent benefits. Position open until filled.

Job Duties (Essential Functions) 

  1. Manages a multifaceted department including: 
    1. Managing budgets and ensuring compliance with procurement and other financial policies
    2. Supervising staff and conducting performance reviews
    3. Establishing departmental procedures and work routines
    4. Ensuring the successful and timely completion of projects and initiatives
  2. Acts as a backup to the Deputy Director of Public Affairs and Community Engagement, ensuring the continuity of program function and success.
  3. Formulates and directs mission-driven, outcome-based marketing and programming initiatives that conform to, and promote, the Library’s image while facilitating communication with the Library’s various public audiences. Also, evaluates the effectiveness of those initiatives.
  4. Develops marketing strategies, action plans, and programs for systemwide public outreach, promotion, and publications.
  5. Plans and coordinates the design of publications, signage, and other marketing materials produced by both internal staff and external contractors, ensuring the appropriate promotion and resulting public awareness of Library products and services.
  6. Supervises a project manager and directs graphic design and writing teams.
  7. Undertakes special projects as assigned and works closely with project managers from various departments.
  8. Works closely with the Digital Branch Manager to ensure that Library website reflects Public Affairs efforts and shares feedback received from patrons and staff.
  9. Assumes overall responsibility for the coordination of traditional literacy programs with the Library’s digital literacy and digital inclusion efforts.
  10. Builds a sense of teamwork and cooperation within the marketing and web design teams and other Library staff.
  11. Keeps abreast of current trends and developments in the profession.

Job Requirements

  • Demonstrates a commitment to fulfilling the mission of the Kansas City Public Library.
  • Demonstrates the ability to successfully interact with both staff and patrons in a large public service organization.
  • Demonstrates team management skills, including the ability to organize work effectively, lead and direct personnel, and plan and execute programs and activities. 
  • Holds considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of marketing, communications, and public relations.
  • Holds considerable knowledge of media communication techniques and publications.
  • Has experience in the design and execution of targeted cultural, academic, or community programming initiatives for various audiences and groups.
  • Has superior writing and public speaking abilities.
  • Holds proven skills in goal identification and achievement, strategic planning, and the organization of multiple projects.
  • Possesses intermediate computer skills related to the position, including but not limited to mastery of the Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Speaks and understands English. Additional consideration will be given to individuals proficient in any non-English languages spoken in Jackson County, Missouri, including Spanish, Vietnamese, French, Arabic, and Swahili.

Required Education and Experience:

Master’s degree in a related field (or an equivalent combination of advanced degree and applicable work experience) and considerable governmental or nonprofit experience with an emphasis on marketing, public relations, publications, and communications.
