Greenhouse/Field Research Internship
Pluton Biosciences is an Ag Tech startup working to help combat climate change through innovation in agriculture. We are looking for a part-time Research Intern to work with our team at our greenhouse & field site near Columbia, MO, as well as remote field locations in MO. The internship will run from May-September of 2024. This team is focused on developing a diverse collection of microbial products capable of capturing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere while enriching agricultural soils. The Research Intern (RI) will assist the Soil Amendments Team in the following duties:
- Culturing and testing of microorganisms in a greenhouse setting.
- Maintain and operate basic microbial production systems in a greenhouse.
- Communicate with the project lead and team members regarding the status of the system and culturing needs.
- Collection of samples and preparation for sequencing and other analyses.
- Making various types of media for use in these experiments.
- Operation of laboratory and greenhouse equipment, including growth chambers, bioreactors, lighting systems, imaging equipment, etc.
- Ability to work independently while also collaborating with a remote team.
- Observing safety and regulatory procedures and maintaining a safe work environment.
- Interact positively with other researchers and managers while maintaining an inclusive and positive work environment.
- Accurate record keeping and presentation of research results.
- Consistent field work, field observations and sampling during summer/fall months.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree (or current undergraduate student) in microbiology, other biological sciences, or a related field.
- 1+ years of laboratory work experience desired.
- Reliability and a strong work ethic.
- Ability and willingness to work a predefined schedule 10-20+ hours per week in a greenhouse and/or field environment with and without direct supervision.
- A basic and demonstrable understanding of microbiological and laboratory techniques.
- Ability to use a word processor, spreadsheets, and presentation software.
Desired Qualifications:
- Greenhouse, growth chamber and horticultural experience a plus.
- Specific microbiology experience.
