AVID Tutor
Greetings,
Columbia Public Schools is hiring those interested in becoming AVID tutors for the fall semester. As a current college student, this is a wonderful opportunity for you to gain employment experience while earning $10/hour.
This is a part-time position during the regular CPS school day. Transportation would be helpful as AVID tutors work throughout Columbia in various secondary buildings. However there are schools that are within walking distance of Columbia College.
AVID Overview:
AVID (Advancement via Individual Determination) is a college readiness system for students in the academic middle. Many of the students will be a first-generation college student.
The CPS AVID system includes 9 AVID secondary schools, both middle school and high school.
AVID students must apply to become a part of this system.
If accepted, students take AVID as one of their elective classes. They must also be enrolled in at least one challenging course (AP, Honors, advanced).
The AVID curriculum is designed to develop the skill sets necessary to become a scholar with a goal of successfully graduating from college. The curriculum focuses on five areas: Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, & Reading (WICOR).
College students join the students 1 or 2 times a week to facilitate small-group Socratic-style tutorial sessions. During these sessions, AVID students present their “points of confusion” from their challenging courses and request assistance from the group in better understanding the problem. The group members use inquiry (questions) to the student presenter to help them resolve their confusion. Tutors participate in these discussions and ensure that members are all contributing in the inquiry process. Subject area expertise is not required.
Tutors also serve as near-peer mentors to AVID Students.
