Overnight Residential Victim Advocate

GENERAL JOB SUMMARY: The Overnight Residential Victim Advocate is the staff member responsible for all primary advocacy (short-term strategies for intervention) during evening and overnight hours. The Advocate’s foremost responsibility is to facilitate each resident’s and non-resident participant’s immediate plan of action during overnight hours. The ORVA works with the participant from the initial point of contact on the issues of crisis intervention, domestic violence education, and specific short-term goals to make the participant and their children physically and emotionally safe during late evening and overnight hours. As the only staff on active duty at these times, the ORVA must be self-directed, proactive, and responsible.

The Overnight Residential Victim Advocate’s primary workplace location is the Shelter. Persons working with this job description may from time to time have a secondary primary workplace location due to client requirements.


 

POSITION-SPECIFIC ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

1. Providing coverage for the 24-hour hotline, ensuring callers have immediate access

2. Screening and conducting initial intake on all people requesting services

3. Conducting intake interviews during overnight hours and providing orientation and follow up to new True North residents and non-resident participants.

4. Determining and providing shelter approval as needed

5. Providing verbal updates to the Hotline Services Coordinator and alerting about issues of concern in a timely manner

6. Providing victims with crisis intervention, victim advocacy and domestic violence education

7. Providing information and/or facilitating communication between residents and primary service providers, such as DFS, hospital personnel, educators, etc.

8. Providing appropriate referral information for other service providers (including other True North staff per protocols) to residents and non-resident callers upon client request

9. Attending and participating in bi-monthly monitoring meetings and trainings to facilitate progressive case management for each resident

10. Conducting exit interviews as needed with residents and provide ongoing follow up for residents and non-residents

11. Providing assistance in completing Ex Parte Orders of Protection

12. Accurately making entries in record-keeping logs and case files (including Osnium, staffing notes, etc., per protocols)
 

GENERAL ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

5. Participating in training activities

6. Maintaining a professional and respectful relationship with clients, staff and general public

7. Maintaining client and staff confidentiality; adhering to a compassionate trauma-informed approach towards clients

8. Being available for staff calls and emergencies that may arise after hours or on weekends and respond to all calls in a timely and thoughtful manner

9. Driving between locations for service provision or staff meetings, which may include: transporting clients; running errands; delivering products or services required by clients; among others

10. Cross-training in other program areas (as needed or requested by the Executive Director) in order to meet client and staff needs; and

11. Performing other duties both within the program area and throughout the agency, as requested or required by the Executive Director.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

1.True North of Columbia encourages all with a G.E.D/Diploma and above who are passionate about working in this field to apply.

1.Associate's Degree in human services or related field or training, education and experience in domestic and sexual violence preferred.

2. Intermediate level understanding of the issues of domestic and sexual violence and sensitivity to survivors’ needs and issues

3. Intermediate knowledge of and ability to use community resources, including resources within True North of Columbia staff
