Where you'll work 

  

Most interns are based at our downtown Pittsburgh office (One Smithfield Street), South Side (Wharton Avenue), or North Side (River Avenue), but we also have locations throughout the county.

Internship Eligibility 

  

  • Enrolled as a student at a college or university 
  • Can work at least 20 hours week/semester. (Up to 29 hours/week) 
  • Able to complete their internship at their designated office (currently, we do not offer hybrid or remote arrangements) 

  

NOTE: Allegheny County paid interns are required to fulfill the federal I-9 documentation. For a list of acceptable documents, please refer to page 2 in the link : I-9 Employment Eligibility Verification (uscis.gov) 

 

Compensation 

  

$15/hour 

The Office of Equity and Engagement (OEE)  

 

The Office of Equity and Engagement empowers DHS’s mission by championing equity, inclusion, engagement, and communication. 

 

 Community Engagement In this exciting role, you'll be a key part of our community engagement efforts through our tabling program! You'll help us develop training for our amazing Department of Human Services (DHS) staff who volunteer at events all around the county.  

 

We're looking forward to creating a helpful resource training program for DHS and setting up a useful training schedule on important topics like Mental Health First Aid, Narcan, First Aid and Safety—focusing particularly on diversion techniques.  

 

As an intern, you'll work closely with our Community Engagement Senior Manager and the Community Engagement Coordinator in the Office of Equity and Engagement.  

 

Race Equity In this role, you’ll play a vital part in supporting the DHS Race Equity Strategy. You’ll dive into analyzing our policies and practices to spot areas that contribute to racial disparities, all while learning from the amazing resources offered by the Government Alliance on Racial Equity (GARE). 

 

You’ll have the chance to shadow Racial Equity Fellows and Equity Program Managers, gaining hands-on experience in content development and facilitating discussions. Plus, you’ll help with planning community events that make a real difference! 

 

We’re looking for someone who has a foundational understanding of race, power, and oppression, and an enthusiasm for government policies that benefit underserved communities.  

 

If you enjoy working both independently and as part of a team, and have a community-first mindset, we’d love to hear from you! Bonus points if you have data analysis skills. 

 

DHS Language Access and Interpretation We're excited to offer an opportunity for linguistics and translation students who want to dive into the world of professional translation project coordination. This is a great chance to expand your knowledge about local and national language access issues while building valuable skills.  

 

To succeed in this role, you'll need to be familiar with CAT tools, have some MTPE (Machine Translation Post-Editing) skills, and possess DTP (Desktop Publishing) abilities. Being tech-savvy will definitely help you thrive!

Video Production This role offers a chance to develop your skills and make a positive impact in our community. Gain hands-on experience while supporting meaningful community initiatives 

In collaboration with the Video Production Manager, Video Producer, and the communications team, you will assist with all aspects of video production, including: 

- Conducting interviews 

- Creating animated videos 

- Editing and delivering final products 

- Engaging with stakeholders 

- Generating story ideas 

- Scouting locations 

- Setting up equipment 

 

Proficiency in video production skills like editing, filming, and audio setup is desired.  

 

Operations Coordinator In this role, you’ll play a key part in supporting the functions of the Office of Equity Engagement. Your tasks will include project management, budgeting, invoicing, contracting, monitoring, and procurement.  

 

We’re looking for someone who is eager to gain experience in managing projects with various stakeholders. If you have experience with project management software, that’s a plus, but it’s not a requirement.
